To say that Italy—the land of opera, fine wines, extremely small cars, romance, and Football Americano— holds a few surprises for Rick Dockery would be something of an understatement. Bound in dark red cloth complete with the original glassine dustjacket, with gold titling, red speckled page edges and bound-in satin bookmark. I think the writing of this novel was very well done, Grisham creates very likeable characters who I found myself rooting for on each and every game day, sometimes even skipping ahead to see if they won. However, what nerved me a bit was seeing a freaking McDonalds because I really get tired of seeing these burger joints in Europe.

Every character - from the cops who forced the confession, to the governor who gleefully denied all appeals for clemency, all the way down to the victim's mother, who Grisham manages to paint as a hateful shrew, even in her mourning - is portrayed in the same manner. Lots of lawyers in the next one. It tells a realistic and possible story about honesty with yourself and others. Rick quickly realizes that in Italy the players care as much about food and wine as they do football, and this is where the fun and story unfolds for the reader.
Though this modern tale gives nice insights into Italian architecture and cuisine, it is short on humor, and the wisdom is diluted by Rick's incessant selfishness and bland approach to many things. Has anyone read this and can anyone confirm that it actually could be good? Overnight, he became a national laughingstock and, of course, was immediately cut by the Browns and shunned by all other teams. Getting back to the book is: Italy is laid back and the 2 hour average lunches in 2011 were normal. I would love to see the movie. Grisham is a master of legal fiction or nonfiction writing. The bestseller first hit bookshelves late last year and is being adapted by The Thin Red Line, Holes, Zodiac. I recommend this book for a nice, light listen.
The book was published in multiple languages including English language, consists of 262 pages and is available in Hardcover format. There is enough football to let the reader know that football is the vehicle for the story, but not so much football as to bog the book down. He just wanted to iron out some of the details. But it will not be another work of non-fiction, nor will it be about football. One of my guides in the area played football for the Bologna Warriors for 10 years.

The description Grisham gives of the meal was enough to convince me that I must go to Italy just for the food. John Grisham is one of the great storytellers of our time. We got to experience that change of heart along with him. Overall, there was nothing about the book that would cause me to dissuade anyone from investing the time or money to read it.
Grisham describes each province that Rick is dragged through by the energetic girl, Livvy, who has become Rick's lovely companion with agendas as a forceful tour guide, in such a way that you feel like you are on the same train, bus or car with them viewing ancient cathedrals, dining it al fresco with wine from the region and plenty of tasty treats that will have your mouth watering before you move on to the next province from which Rick would love to escape. No time for a conscience. Even in conclusion, he resolves very few of his own issues back home, and instead continues to escape from them. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. He knows nothing about Parma, not even where it is, has never been to Europe, and doesn't speak or understand a word of Italian.
