As witches and humans turn against each other, as faes retreat in fear, and as vampires rise, Lark and Simon discover that an unseen force is behind it. She made a sound, gods, that sound, deep and dripping with desire. Now he knows that she is everything to him, but he needs to convince her of that. Simon and Lark's relationship is not the only thing which is great in this book. For instance, Spoiler Alert: The main character crosses the veil to meet her new beau's family, meets them, goes for a walk, and then she is back on Earth doing her job - hunting. Instead he moved to the sink to roll up his sleeves and wash his hands.
You can almost hear him growling from the pages. And visits from some of the Cascadia wolves! Feisty, funky and uniquely beautiful heroine - check. It was nice having Lark and Simon visit Lycia and learning some of the strange customs of the land. However, I have found a lot of typos which kind of make me crazy. Surviving him is their last. Lark Jaansen is a high ranking witch from her clan in Los Angeles and has been asked to come to Seattle by Clan Owen to help better train their hunters in handling the influx of violence that is being wrought on Seattle.
A mysterious war has been waged among the Others. There is absolutely no whining, nor there are moments where she is stupid. I just had trouble connecting to the main in the first one but not this one. And that's not necessarily a bad thing! A single, hungry entity older than recorded history has returned to gorge on the magick of his victims. She was intense when she was in battle and she could handle herself in every situation.
He is the Magister, nothing less than the end of time. But it's not just physical strength that I look for, and while Lark had plenty of that, as a character, I personally didn't feel that she was a well-rounded one. The kind of man who not only wore scarves but looked totally adorable in them. When the morning comes, has the love and trust found between Lark and Simon been enough to help them face the new reality facing them? The violence against witches escalates, and Others are also taken. The world is dark and dangerous while the characters have a well-developed sense of goodness and love. A handling time of 2-4 business days applies for all orders. It's fun to experience them grow on each other and realize they are hot for each other for themselves.
Another thing is that I couldn't really feel the chemistry between Lark and Simon. Simon Leviathan is a Lycian werewolf prince, and co-owner of the Heart of Darkness club with Dominic. I identified with Nell as a Hunter and her leader role in that respect, but Lark's role felt more than that. Lark is a very strong and smart warrior witch with a healthy dose of independence to boot. He enjoyed taking care of her, making sure she was fed and being her rock in this troublesome time.
He played cards, drank, smoked cigars, stayed up late and had impeccable taste. A single, hungry entity older than recorded history has returned to gorge on the magick of his victims. I like this author's writing style, and very much like her world-building. He was luxury cars and cashmere throws on the back of a couch that cost more than all her possessions combined most likely. Surviving him is their last. They worked through them I think in part because by that time they both realized how precious and fragile they were against the Magister and his minions. That shit got a girl all drowned and stuff.
He's turned more than a few heads during his time, but he's never met his mate, the one he wants to mark as his—until he begins to work with Lark. Lark is strong and quirky and instantly loveable as she searches for and finds a new life for herself with Clan Owen.
His eyes were dark, fringed by thick lashes. Less than a month now! Simon is the one who picks her up from the airport. And, she's a kick-butt heroine. What I can tell you is that Chaos Burning is not only outstanding and a instant keeper for me but it is also a book that I whole heartedly Joyfully Recommend as a book you will not want to miss reading.
