Supplemented with original newspaper articles, clippings, funeral notices, memorial ephemera and more, the collection will take us on a journey through a fascinating, moving, and melancholically beautiful part of our past. Beyond the Dark Veil is an intimate peek into what some would consider to be one of the darker aspects of Victorian culture.

It's a truly lovely, thought-provoking collection. But for those of us in the field who are looking to our contemporaries to light the way for scholarship, it is, like life, a beauty fleeting. The Victorians were using the fairly new medium of photography to do something that no one in history had done before: Keep their loved ones with them for eternity. The people back in that time truly did have a fine splendor about themselves, and even in death, the families made sure that they still went out in style.
This book was a tie-in with a 2013 exhibition of Victorian post-mortem photography. The Thanatos Archive is home to an extensive collection of post-mortem photos, which they used to assemble this high-quality volume showcasing this macabre practice from a time when death was a normal part of every day life. A must read for anyone that likes something a little haunting. So muchly disappointment size wise but not content wise. Although I would have preferred the text be a bit larger the small print is rather hard on the eyes after awhile and some of it I needed a magnifying glass If you appreciate Victorian postmortem photography as much as I do, this beautifully-designed book is an absolute must for your personal library.

I've always loved post mortem photography and think it's a beautiful way to memorialize a loved one. Death was a huge part of life in the 1800's, and this provides that context using pictures in a way that words might never do. Good friends would not recognize me, and gay men would hit on me.

In some of the photographs, you can glimpse the rolled back eyes; the limp hands; the dribble of seepage trailing out of the mouths.

However, it quickly got my attention and made it onto my favs list. There are also short essays accompanying the photos although my only quibble with the book would be the choice of font colour because it rendered the printing faint and difficult to read in the low light conditions in which I was reading. I kickstarted this book because I am excited by the work of the Thanatos Archive.
